About music and about writing about music. And sometimes about writing about writing about music.

Well, the abysmal summer concert season continues. On the heels of musical cash cows like U2, Christina Aguilera and Rihanna scrapping concert dates or even entire tours, the organizers of Lilith Fair have just confirmed that 10 August dates on the women's music tour will be canceled.
The impacted cities are Salt Lake City, Montreal, Raleigh, Charlotte, West Palm Beach, Tampa, Birmingham, Austin, Houston and Dallas. Refunds are available at points of purchase.
Rumors of the cancellations were swirling earlier this week after poor ticket sales. Dates in Nashville and Phoenix had already faced the chopping block.
“Everyone involved with the tour would like to apologize to the fans and artists scheduled to play in these markets, and express appreciation for all the support for the festival’s return," said Lilith co-founder Terry McBride. "Lilith remains the only tour of its kind, and we are confident that fans will be amazed by what each date has to offer.”
This summer's tour was to mark the comeback of the festival highlighting female musicians after an 11-year hiatus. Among the artists scheduled to appear on select dates this summer are La Roux, Sia, Gossip, Tegan & Sara, and founder Sarah McLachlan.
More to come ...
Soldout caught up with Canadian lovelies The Most Serene Republic last weekend, as they were wrapping up a headlining tour with shows in New York City and New Jersey.
After a rough night that included a performance at Brooklyn's Knitting Factory, the guys fueled up on a homemade brunch of scrambled eggs and coffee before gamely treating us to a rendition of "Pink Noise," off their recently-released EP, "Fantasick Impossibliss."
On a recent weekend afternoon, the five Canadians collectively known as Zeus crammed into the bathroom of a Brooklyn apartment and treated us to our first shower installment of our "Apartment Stories" series. Performing "Kindergarten," from their debut LP "Say Us," which was released in February, the Toronto residents proved that they don't need a large stage setting (though they did recently open a show for compatriots Broken Social Scene) to show off their musical chops.
Fun fact! The group got its start as the backing band for Arts & Crafts labelmate Jason Collett, but nowadays they appear to be comfortable having the spotlight to themselves. Even if, in this case, the spotlight is a showerhead.
Everyone's favorite tween sensation who's not Justin Bieber released a new music video yesterday.
Yes, our beloved Miley Cyrus has finally crossed the threshold she's been toeing for so long, fully abandoning her Disney Channel, girl next door roots for full-on slutdom. The clip for her new single, "Can't Be Tamed," (insert coming-of-age, teenage girl rebellion joke here), cinematically resembles the latest Harry Potter installment and features her basically writhing around in a cage for a few minutes, looking like the product of a one night stand between Lady Gaga and a giant crow.
She's definitely jumping on the Gaga-Glambert train musically, but there's enough good production behind it to make up for the fact that homegirl can't really sing all that well. Or at all.
My first reaction to the song itself is that I kind of like it. In fact, I really like it. I'm also trying to forget about the fact that she's like 14.
What do you think of the newest entry in the Miley Cyrus juggernaut? Sound off below!
ooooh Hannah Montana discovered orgasms AND Gaga on the same day!
Miley! I love it. I've heard (that is, my friends have said over email) that it's just Miley being Gaga'd and sexed up but if you watch the E! Online interview with her she talks about writing the song, designing her video herself, and how the sexy video is kind of an eff you to her boyfriend who got all the attention when he was all half-naked in the movie where they met... so whether she was influenced by pop music's recent dark turn or Gaga's video style or if she's just being fed a script, she's spinning it as her own creation.
And it's hot. And she looks hot in it (did her teeth get smaller or did her face get bigger?). I'm not ashamed to say I'll take one of every outfit she wears in it. And some wings...
And shit if the song ain't a jam.
I wish the beginning announcer guy had been Crispin Glover.
How old is she again? A quick Google search: 17, 18 in November. I'm a little creeped.
Well, this answers who will fill the void left by Britney Spears. The video does seem like it wants to cash in on the Gaga aesthetic, but look at those Britney faces! Britney-esque writhing! Even the age factor brings me back to the glory days of Ms. Spears.
Also, she totally touched her boobies.
On the first listen, the thump-bounce of this song immediately gets me. I like the video, I like the tune, I like the direction. I can't believe I'm saying it, but I'm down.
