don't block her shine, shawty
I have sold out.
I admit it -- I'm a slave to the capricious whims of pop music. (I'm a Slave 4 U, Britney.) And like the stunning nike7up (who is subject to a forthcoming Soldout feature), I have a love/hate relationship with the idols I place on the pop pedestal. Lindsay Lohan is no different.
Pop is sticky sweet, which leads to decay: danger and tension careen through Britney's Blackout and smash like the car crash in Salem's Trapdoor. So I guess I had a little freakout of my own when I saw that Tri-Angle Records had enlisted its friends to dissect/pay tribute to/critique Lohan's very existence today in a mixtape. Robin of 20jazzfunkgreats says it best:
Inspired in part by Lindsay Lohan’s grotesquely fascinating black hole existence and in part by my unwavering belief in the power of pop music as an artform, I saw an opportunity to create something interesting with her music, and decided to ask some friends to reinterpret some of Lindsay’s songs. “Tri Angle Records Presents: Let Me Shine for You” is the result.
This is a stunning work of art. Contrast this to another blogworthy release today, the Amanda Fucking Palmer covers of Radiohead tracks. This is 2010, where apparently Lindsay Fucking Lohan births the art that speaks to our culture, and, on the flipside, the heralded Radiohead is stripped of its redeeming synesthesia, leaving only boring whiteness behind. So, you take your lazy eyes and your ukuleles; I'll bathe in the beautiful trainwreck of Lohan interpreted by Glasslands/Brooklyn-favorite Oneohtrix Point Never (sharing headspace right now with nike7up's echoic pop collages) and Autre Ne Veut's imagining of Martin Gore's fishnet-clad, eyeliner-drenched love child with Lindsay.
