RIP Whitney Houston
We'll miss you Whitney!
In tribute, a little something we found on the internet today. We hope you like it.
About music and about writing about music. And sometimes about writing about writing about music.

Not actually a new series we're starting (though we could...volunteers?)
Just high praise for DJ Lobsterdust (who? anyone?). Well whatever, Lobsterdust killed it on this one.
Anyway. It's 2 of our favorite ladies--Stevie and Britney. And it's nicely done. The ending is a little abrupt but you can't fault anyone for that.
Enjoy.
Stevie Nicks vs. Britney Spears - Till The Dream Ends (lobsterdust mashup) by lobsterdust
A collection of songs and albums I found myself listening to this year. Some came out this year, some didn't. All are worth sharing. Here we go.
Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" (Eff you, Bon Iver). This one is first because I have no idea where else to put it and I just wanted to put it out there that this is a good song by a female artist and Bon Iver is boring.
That one Adele song...tried the rest of the album...eh. She's got the
love Amy's got the squalor ...
Speaking of...I've been listening to a fuckton of Amy Winehouse for obvious reasons. RIP Amy, sniffle (unironic sniffle!!).
None of the new tori cuz I'm a bad bad aging fangurl...and dont get me started on how Tori is aging. Her face does not look right.
Britney "I Wanna Go" is Femme Fatale's "Toxic"... actually the whole album is pretty good, even that song that sounds exactly like Supertramp's "Logical Song" is ok.
Robyn, obviously, but let's not forget this Robyn+ RyeRye remix because it's pretty amazing. (Nothing beats the "Call Your Girlfriend" dance but I fear this is being lost in the shuffle and it shouldn't be)
The Gaga record because it's perfect in how it is flawed (every song is 3 songs, it's all over the place, the lyrics are really ridiculous and contrived in some places, etc etc... but it's Gaga so it's all forgivable since you can listen to it while working out).
An illicit copy of the Sleep No More soundtrack including tracks I've named "creepy drone sounds," "entrance music for a film," and "creepy 30s speakeasy" (This version of Peggy Lee's "Why Dont You Do Right" with record crackles in the background=perfection) ...And because they operate in a similar vein, I'm lumping Esben and the Witch into this...at least "Marching Song." (Not so down with the video but just listen.)
The Throne, straight through twice and only twice, but "N*ggas in Paris" 3 times at the show in Atl
("Talk amongst your friends"). Also props to those dudes for slowing it down in the beginning Salem-style.
Oh Land before she got famous and went to the movies with Katy Perry... whatever I have a picture with her at SXSW 2011 before that happened
This JoJo Durk remix
SPF 5K especially this jammy...do not play it for your parents or even your open-minded aunt....but you should play it at your next dance party
Honorable mention for Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun's "We Were Wild" since I got to see it performed at Cameo in Brooklyn and Star Bar in Atlanta (the day before the video below was made, it's not great but you get the idea).
2nd honorable mention to Nicki Minaj because I can't put just her verse of "Monster" (again) and this video has her singing with Rihanna near an airplane wreck (weird "Fly"-association but ok) and then fighting ninjas. So, for general weirdness and wigs--kudos to Nicki. Also way to spread out 1 album in 2 years--this song is the 8th single (8th!?) and was released over a year after the first single. Dang.
And my bfs band, Silent Drape Runners, the most bloggable band ever.
PARAISO- Nurvous Records by SPF 5000
Y'know how "house music" usually has some impossibly deep-voiced duder announcing mid-track that you're listening to "HOUSE MUSIC"? Because you might not know?
SPF 5000 doesn't need that shit. Just Amy Douglas's channeling of every disco goddess ever plus producer Rob Phillips's beats plus fun. Their new track PARAISO (on NURVOUS) is an anthem. Check them on SoundCloud here. We've been fans of @SPF5K for a while now--my personal fave is P.O.T.S.--and if you're on SoundCloud you're going to want to follow them. As their Twitter bio says they're a "25th Century Dance Band": futuristic, beepy, bouncy, genre-crushing, and highly danceable.
"Ok," you're thinking, "They've got a few tracks online, that's neat...but when can we hear the full power of Douglas's vocals and maybe see her in some leopard print and seqins?"
BAM.
Adventure[s] makes no promises regarding Ms. Douglas's outfit... but I'm crossing my fingers.
It's no secret that we here at Soldout have a special love-mock relationship with Britney Spears. We love for its vapidity--or surprising lack thereof--and laugh at the popstar for the same reason. Femme Fatale? Over-produced jams with ridiculous lyrics. Love. Her fear of flying but desire to be a bird? Priceless. Mock...and also love.
Personally, I've come to think that the woman has lost interest in her pop star career and wants to retire, but she knows her retirement wouldn't be a James Murphy-esque step out of the spotlight into another one, but a true decision to stay home with the kids and the new boyfriend watching Dora the Explorer and giggling. And she's not quite ready to admit that and knows that even if her career has spanned almost 20 years, she's still barely 30. And maybe the latest video is her unwillingness to admit that, judging from her Hello Kitty colored hair extensions and Ke$ha-esque irreverence.
However, within the video are so many delightful self-deprecating references that I think she's actually grown up a lot. Unless she's a better actress than I know...and that marquee for Cross Roads 2: Cross Harder is NOT a joke:
(Thanks to Edith Zimmerman at The Hairpin for pointing that out--Easter Egg indeed!)
So...without counting all of the best moments, here are my faves. Add your own in the comments pls!
