Dance Off of the Sexes

I'm not much for the battle of the sexes. It's just not my feminism. I don't think the girls versus guys competition really gets us anywhere, it just breeds more animosity between the sexes.

But if we're talking dance offs...it is ON. Which is why I really, really hope that Beyonce's latest is the first in a series of girls versus boys dance offs. I feel like the Spice Girls really threw down the gauntlet in the late 90's with their Girl Power schtick but from a feminist see-privilege-say-something stance, it was really White Girl Power...so it's nice to see Beyonce taking it into the next century with a more inclusive stance. The dudes in riot gear in the desert bring it into a contemporary international setting (veiled implication, y'all).

I think the recycling of an old Major Lazer beat--the auto-tuned crying baby, basically one of that album's calling card statements--is a little lazy. Guess Diplo's too busy talking shit about M.I.A. and, like, getting tatts  all "cap on rim bent Denzel e'ry time" to try for B.

Kids of 88 + Lady Gaga = everything we've ever wanted ever

Back when Russ and I saw Kids of 88 at pianos (with Cassette Kids and K. Flay opening--killer show) I said something to the effect of, "This is the last time we'll see these kids up close. Next time they come to New York they'll be at MSG opening for Gaga or The National or something"

SXSW mini-update

So... Russ and Marley made it to Austin! This journey involved 4 airports, 2 flights, and 1 Super Shuttle bus.  Our feelings about JetBlue are mixed... but improving with the help of our Flight-F-Ups conselor, Sean. What up Sean!

We're pretty sure Russ made up the name of this band in the past year. They're a punk band from Hoboken, NJ so it's possible that overheard him spitballing band names on the train. Not sayin...but just sayin.

Popnography of Out.com interviews Britney and asks the things we dont dare.  We're willing to overlook the fact that the title of the piece is "Britney Emails Her Heart Out" and very few of her responses are complete sentences.  The little tidbits (brit-bits) that we get from her are solid gold.  This entertained team Soldout for a solid weekday.  Amazing.  Some key q's and a's below.  (She loves Gaga! No. All of my songs are f–ing amazing.

How is Femme Fatale different from your other albums?
I think Femme Fatale is my most upbeat and mature album yet.

Do you listen to your contemporaries’ music?
Yes. I love Gaga and Rihanna. Rihanna’s "S & M" is awesome. 

Which song from the last 10 years do you wish you had recorded?
Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie.”
